Achieving the Jack-Knife Position Made Easy with the CS Easy Prone™

Posted 2 February 2026

Achieving and maintaining a safe, effective jack-knife position can be challenging when using traditional one-piece prone supports. Fixed, flat designs often limit adjustability and make fine tuning difficult once the patient is on the table.

During a recent patient positioning workshop, our team identified a simple and effective way to configure the CS Easy Prone™ chest and pelvis supports to achieve a stable jack-knife position, demonstrating just how flexible and intuitive the system is in clinical practice.

Why the Jack-Knife Position Can Be Difficult

The jack-knife position requires precise elevation and separation of the chest and pelvis to:

  • optimise surgical access
  • reduce abdominal pressure
  • and support safe ventilation

With conventional one-piece, flat prone supports, achieving this often involves compromises. Limited adjustability can mean repeated repositioning, increased handling of the patient, and reliance on workarounds that aren’t always ideal.

A Flexible Alternative: CS Easy Prone™

The CS Easy Prone™ has been designed with modularity and adjustability in mind. By using separate chest and pelvis supports, clinicians can:

  • independently adjust height and spacing
  • tailor positioning to the individual patient
  • achieve a controlled jack-knife position quickly and easily

As shown in the setup below, the CS Easy Prone™ allows the jack-knife position to be achieved without complex adjustments or additional accessories, simply by configuring the supports to suit the required position.

What makes this setup particularly effective is its simplicity. There is no need for fixed frames or rigid components, and adjustments can be made efficiently during setup. This flexibility supports:

  • improved workflow in theatre
  • reduced setup time
  • greater confidence for staff when positioning patients

Compared to traditional one-piece designs, the CS Easy Prone™ offers a more adaptable solution that works with the team.

The CS Easy Prone™ continues to demonstrate how thoughtful design can make complex positioning easier, safer, and more intuitive. Whether used for standard prone positioning or more advanced configurations such as jack-knife, the system provides the flexibility clinicians need without added complexity.
